"Out."

I remember when I first read Coraline. I was little, and it had just been released. I've always been interested in "creepy" sorts of things, so that book was right up my alley. Years and years later, the movie Coraline came out. Once I saw that it was done in stop-motion, I fell even more in love with the story. Laika has been a huge inspiration to me even when I'm not piddling around or thinking of stop-motion dolls or ideas. However "Out." is a work in progress idea that I would like to continously work on and maybe one day turn it ionto a short film. Right now I'm just playing with figures and movement.

I've always had a knack for working on a really small scale. I used to make super small books for my sculpture pieces when I was in highschool, so sewing things this small is no trouble for me. (Especially with all that Barbie doll dress making practice my Granny gave me.)

This gallery is a collection of the props and dolls and whathaveyou that might go into me making "Out." including several in-progress shots.

The beginning bits. This is one of the first armatures I attempted to make. Since this attempt I've learned to reinforce those wire bits so they can withstand a bit more movement.
I like the way fabric crinkles when it moves. So I wanted my doll to mimic a ragdoll...but with more structure.
The face I wanted to be made of clay.

It's a bit dark, forgive me, but you can see some of the expression that I can create now!
Now with eyes and ears!
Time for some pants. Jeans were a great start.
Jeans are finished. Complete with functioning front and back pockets. And now a new hooded shirt!
Here's the hood up.
Now for some hair.
Tiny shoe patterns.
Voila! Shoes!
And here is the mini-me all complete!

Once I have the under bits made, it's time to cover it with a some plush.
The front end is practically complete.

If you've ever seen in me, I'm pretty sure you've never seen me without my backpack. So naturally, a mini-me simply must have a backpack. So here are the pieces all laid out.
And here it is all complete. (With a mini journal just like mine inside!)

I have a set of monsters called "The Triplets." So I decided to start making that trio next.
Here they are all completed! If you look closely you can see their little teeth.
